The text at page 18 is likely meant to be some sutra; in Buddhist prayer sutras are chanted in turns like Mei and her mother are doing, and are written in really archaic kanji shapes (probably 9th century Chinese) that to an untrained eye can look like gibberish.
For reference, an image search for the Heart Sutra turns up some results that are remarkably similar to the text in this chapter.

It seems like the chapter number and the volume number are swapped.
