First chapter: we learn that all his teammates pass the ball to him all the time and he learns about oriented reception from Fukuda
Now: he's behind everyone else because (amongst other things) he basically can't receive the ball correctly

@Ulgan

He learned how to do it in chapter 1, but he did it once against a wall. Now he has to do it with/against people who have been doing it since they were kids. Aoi's problem is how he lacks game knowledge and collective notions.

Togashi is already the best character in this series by far, can we have him as the main character pls?

Now, what Togashi meant by wide makes sense. The difference between Aoi and Togashi is so clear. For Aoi, when he receives the ball, he simply stops the ball, spins around and passes it which takes a long time because his body shape is too narrow to do all of it in one go.

Compared this to Togashi who recieves the ball, he opens up his body shape so that after he controls the ball, he can immediately hit the ball because he has a wide enough space to do it in one go.

Remember that recieving the ball is only one part of the whole process, a player must immediately think on what to do next with the ball. And therefore must open up their body to passing options even before getting the ball. That's why notice Togashi shouted to Aoi on passing to him immediately after he hit it to the wall. He was testing on how quick he was to instinctively prepare to pass immediately after receiving the ball.

he also did it in the selection iirc, but that wasn't my point.
It's obvious (and normal) that he lacks something compared to his teammates, but having him act like an idiot that can't receive a ball after he's previous team was basically a "give him the ball" one and that whole first chapter about oriented reception feels wrong.

@Melvin
I know receiving the ball is only the starting part of the whole process, but in the last chapters he looks like he can't actually do it and it's irritating me. It feels like this whole thing could have been portraied A LOT better. The Togashi "bit" is the only part of this whole "arc" that makes sense, before it we basically saw just him losing the ball on every single passage he receives, and given his history I find that stupid.

@Ulgan I do agree with you, if you look through my comments on previous chapters, I still find it hard to believe that Aoi is unable to do some of the most basic things ever. I honestly thought it would be better to have said that Aoi lacked game sense or game IQ and the coach could have like sat him down, showed him so actual football games or etc.

I think football in this manga is definitely less thought out than Farewell my Dear Cramer or the gold standard, Giant Killing but it's still decent enough. It's not as dumb as Blue Lock thankfully.

Trapping/receiving the ball is prolly the only thing I can do well with both legs (I'm heavily reliant on my right leg for shooting/dribbling). Feels like it's something I've been able to do since forever; seemingly purely instinctive. So I find a bit incredulous that someone chosen for a top pro club can't do it. I mean, most casual players can do it.
