He doesn't think you can successfully strive for greatness in your sport while also balancing a relationship. He thinks that's naive. I find it a common Japanese idea that's used when discussing anything that should take a lot of hours to perfect. Relationships are often treated as secondary. Taiki and friends all are in relationships though and provide an alternative perspective.

you're exactly right. i think what the neighbor is underestimating is that chinatsu is also a competitor on a base level even though she's retired from hooping, and does not have the type of zero-sum game mentality when it comes to relationships that he probably does.

Why every manga protag in the sports genre is usually the underdog? When will we get an actual depiction of a genius as a protagonist? There's a lot to explore from the genius's point of view too.

I already know that Inomata won't win against Yusa ans the author will try to pull some moral lesson at the end.
