Following this chapter by chapter makes me realize how slow it has been despite being 30 pages per chap.

Well the guy dies on chapter 1, how could it not be a tragedy just with that? Although itoshi no kana also features a ghost of a girl who apparently killed herself but I wouldnt' call that a tragedy.
However in this case we are always in between, not knowing if things will become very bleak or what, I feel like we are nearing the end, so if in doubt you could wait...a year maybe and see what people thought of the ending.
