I have no idea why he's so interested in helping the dwarven engineering company. They absolutely can't pay him as much as he would make as an adventurer by raiding the bottom levels of a dungeon. He doesn't want to be an adventurerer since earning a good income from that would attract too much attention to himself. He can stay low-key and make a living for himself helping the dwarves.
