All jokes aside, what a sad chapter. Even though I knew who Benno was talking to before the reveal it still got to me.

I'm pretty positive that she was his first (and only) love who he had intended to marry. She's the reason why he's closed himself off to the possibility of ever getting married as he feels that nobody else could ever replace her (or something to that effect).

It's Liz, Benno's former lover. She's the one in her death bed in chapter one of the Anthology. Also ch 17 is going to be about her.
She's not really talked about much since Benno mostly kept things to himself. Basically she had the same "disease" as Myne, the Devouring. iirc there is one chapter in the light novel that goes more into depth about her.

Did the anime completely skip over her story, then? I don't recall them revealing what she died of, outside of it happened. Feels like a shame to leave out a critical part of Benno's motivations and trauma.

I think her having the devouring was mentioned in the fanbooks not sure tho.

the anime didn't mention it and it wasn't revealed in the LNs untill much later on it was first initially revealed in one of the fanbooks when ppl were asking wether the reason why benno knew so much about the devouring was because of his lost love.
