Not gonna lie I was half-expecting her to be dead on the floor when Lutz come in.

This is a good use of an anthology chapter. Focusing on characters such as Frieda who has some significant impact early on, but gradually disappears from the story (or even mentions in the story) as it goes on. That said it makes sense based on the situation that it goes that way.

For those who hasn’t read the main story and curious (why are you here then), you can check the main story from the manga/LN from the shrine maiden and duke’s daughter arcs onwards. (Spoiler: it’s nothing serious, as per the title, the bookworm simply “ascends”)

Even early in I felt like Frieda's character was a little one-note so I'm always pleased to see these side stories add some meat on her bones.

Sadly it won't, as the Anime had already gone past this plot.

This is related to the plot of "Part I : Daughter of a Soldier".

While Anime had already covered it and "Part II : Apprentice Shrine Maiden" with it's 3 Seasons so far.

And the upcoming Season 4 is going to start covering "Part III : Adopted Daughter of an Archduke".

I never seen radio calisthenic before, but I think there is something identical to it here and yes, it's not exactly what you can call "exercise" if you are young or physically healthy. It is meant for the old or physically weak, after all.
