You all familiar with the hero and demon king trope

I feel like the hero vs demon king were no longer a serious and more of comedy nowadays. I want a recommendations for serious hero vs demon. Where humanity in danger, where you can feel the tension of war. The feeling of humanity day by day dying and starting to extinct.

Like in the scale of AoT? That's hard
90% of characters named demon lord nowadays are not even demon-lord-ing, much less threatening humanity.
Kekkon Yubiwa is the most recent story with actual "fights against demon king" plot, and it is still comedy.

Other titles with serious fights against "demon"...
100man no Inochi?
Parallel Paradise? (I mean... in the story they're really serious about fighting the demon. The story itself... well... )

The closest to that has comedy in my collection, but for a dying world and serious heroes I recommend Magic Knight Rayearth (1 and 2). The antagonist does not belong to the Demon King troupe but a mighty oponent still.

hmm, I'm like 30-40 chapters into Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai, which while it looks aimed for kids, it's rather bloody too. Following the mentioned Young Dai who learns magic to defeat the Demons threatening the land and princess he's crushed hard on.

Damn, one of possibly great trope were ruined by comedy

The only serious threat I've seen were in patchwork hero and versus

Hero against Demon Lord already existed for instance in Dragon Ball, but in a format closer to what it is nowadays it is indeed Dragon Quest, though in more than 30 years many things have changed. The fantasy aspects are mostly rip-offs from Records of the Lodoss War (LN), but everything is mixed with everything nowadays, so more than retracking is about finding what you want to read (though I always recommend learning about the origins).

They carried the same kind of story into Beet the Vandel Buster with their own original spin on it. It turned into a kind of unconventional Hero vs Demon Lord(s) kind of series.

Pretty sure Koji was fighting cancer and finally recovered a couple years ago and the series started up again.

I can think of a couple right now that aren't exactly the normal Hero and Demon Lord stories.

Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu - This on kind of blurs the lines on who is actually evil. I'd try and explain it, but I'd probably do a bad job of it.

I'm not sure how far the manga goes, or if the LN is still ongoing.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha - "Be Mine, Hero!" "I Refuse!" - This one is more about world building and the Hero and Demon Lord putting aside their roles and working together to try and prevent the violent aftermath that would come after their battle.

It has a bunch of normal romcom troupes, but I remember it being pretty interesting to read.

haha, it do be like that after like what... 6 years?
(just end it already)

I'm a bit hesitant to put Maou to Yuusha no Tatakai here since it's only 4 volumes in,
but I do expect that this to continue to tell the the serious version of battle Hero against Demon King.
I liked the art.
That said, I do agree with some of the criticisms about the pacing (sometimes being either boring or confusing),
because (so far) the story has been mainly about noble politics, recruiting, strategy, and everything,
in preparation for the battle.
