Cultural differences. the western world is more geared towards property ownership, thus "she's mine", leading to anger and violence and proving oneself superior.

I don’t really understand the “property ownership” angle you’re getting at, or how that relates to this scenario. My point is that if I were in his shoes I’d immediately assume that they were trying to take advantage of my significant other in their addled state and wouldn’t simply overlook that.

I don’t know if that’s also just down to cultural differences, but that to me just seems like the right/obvious thing to do, which is why I’m surprised that the author wrote it this way.

well the wife explained that whenever he's flooded with strong feelings he stops thinking and runs away.

I still feel like that doesn’t really excuse it because does he just take random trips every time someone upsets him? The whole time he was running away he was dead set on the idea that his wife was cheating, but a much more reasonable explanation would be that she was being taken advantage of. That never even crossed his mind.

That's just his personality, not necessarily about "taking random trips" but run away as in he doesn't want to face his fear. In page 11-12 he also hesitated and bracing himself to call for "sick." In page 41 he was stammering after being kissed by a girl, even the page before that he said "sorry for being so boring." So yeah he has alot of insecurities and not confident or brave enough to intervene even after seeing his wife cheating.

At least I can relate to having to call your school/workplace for absence, especially when you're also lying.
