Gruesome but great story. Reminded me of a quest in Dragon Age 2. 😀

What exactly is the main character, sensei's, role in this series? He contributed absolutely nothing to this case, apart from employing Tsubaki. In fact he even tried to stop her from uncovering the truth, despite being the very person paying her to do it. Is he just going to be a stooge with the sole purpose of being the butt of Tsubaki's jokes and nothing else?

His key role is as an observer and his contribution is to experience the tragedies that happen from a first person PoV (thus acting as a self insert) and convey that emotion to the reader through his internal monologues. And it's been done better than 99% of manga protagonists i've seen.

I can agree on that. As far as passive, weak, incapable protagonists with little street smarts go, he's up there.
