Grief really does twist people in ugly ways

It's not only that. Even back when the brother was well and alive, it seemed like this "professor" primarily wanted to restore his family's glory, whatever that entails, and only secondarily wanted to make sure his students receive the best kind of education for their future. In other words, he views his students as tools to make his own position in the society rise as high as possible. That's not doing your work to the best of your ability. Coming from such a starting point, it's no wonder it was so easy for him to be twisted by grief to the point he finds satisfaction in mentally torturing a small kid. Because even before the grief, children were just stepping stones for him.

I am by no means saying he's right, he's not in the slightest, but I can somewhat understand it.
But it leads back into what I said last chapter about how the mature thing, the right thing to do in this situation would be to immediately resign since he can not maintain neutrality.
