I think it would've been funny if he didn't even try to hide it but instead made a game out of how long it would take for her to recognize him or maybe he could genuinely contemplate whether he's really that different when he's on/off the clock and every time he comes to the conclusion that he doesn't even change that much, he thinks: "Wow, she's kinda dumb... but she's cute so it's fine."
