To fill out the Japanese beer history in this chapter a bit:
The first brewery in Japan was Spring Valley Brewery in Yokohama, established in 1868 by William Copeland (whose original name was Johan Martinius Thoresen) from Norway. He learnt his trade at Arendal Brewery, before emigrating to California. He only spent a short time there, changing his name to (easier for Americans to pronounce) William Copeland.
30 years old, in 1864 he arrived in Japan, which was recently opened for foreigners.
In 1885, his Spring Valley Brewery was taken over by the newly founded Japan Breweries Company that changed name to Kirin B.C. a few years later.
Copeland/Thoresen is buried at Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery and his grave is kept by Kirin. Cans of Kirin beer is placed on the grave on the date of his death, February 11th, every year.
(Yes, I read a book about him last year).
