Funny enough, I remember the LN downplayed the divine protection angle. He was just a morally corrupt character who was totally arrogant and selfish. Though he had a point that Gideon would've died eventually had he stayed with rhe party long enough. The anime made him more sympathetic and made it look like he brcame what he was due to his divine protection's influence. He was totally a hate sink without any sympathetic saving features in the LN.
