i don't think it's saying that they are wonderful happy places, i think that it's saying that in this setting with women being the lowest social class, it's better than most alternatives and being picked off the street and given a job (no matter how corrupt or morally gray) can rekindle your determination in life

idk man, doesn't sound like it's being portrayed as a happy place to me. I guess if you're imagining the girls being perpetually drugged and strapped to a bed in some tunnels under the earth, then I guess it looks happy compared to that but, it's still not great. Better than being on the street though, where you'll have no food, clothes, shelter, money, and still get beat and raped anyways.
