Does he need to know it? Could just be survivor's guilt (Pretty sure it's applicable here.).
Also, the friend might have penned a note, stating that he was disappointed with his life, and how nobody respected/trusted him anymore. The old man might just have assumed his behaviour was the trigger. It's probably just guilt on his part.
