Do you mean side characters or the audience?

For Side characters they do it because the MC needs an excuse to dish out some good ol face-slapping. It's a tactic Chinese Authors love to exploit to satisfy the masses.

this is my own theory, but to me it seems chinese have a prob with their selfestime in general; there is a reason why those "you all wronged me but i'll prove that im the strongest" storys are so popular.
I mean, we're talking about a society where your social standing is decided yb the amount of money you make and what brand your clothes/watch/car are...this is somewhat comical considering that they're living in a supposedly communist state, but are in reality more materialistic then the so called "capitalistic western devils".
