As MC increased them by using a item drop is clearly not something that was impossible to fix, the system could have changed them to average level too.
The limit on the stats upgrade from items is logical though, is clear the author/studio decided to not make MC too OP, but the reasons for it are weak, should have put some more though in it.

If he can't wear the armor, it should be the same case for the weapon. He shouldn't be able to wield it because of his stats. Ugh, that's going to bother me greatly. Have him use only weak weapons then. That would make a lot more sense.
