The world building is subpar and the cast of characters are superficial.
Characters are introduced with motivations, i.e. want to do X because of Y; e.g. want to revenge because family was massacred. These motivations are supposed to be the cause and form beliefs and convictions that would permeate a character's decision or action throughout the story. However, the story neither show nor tell these beliefs or convictions, thus completely neglect them. As a result, the characters became as easily forgotten as whatever their backstory are.
The world building is basically whatever convenient for the story. The protag is a son of a well-known merchant association because it is convenient for him to be so. What kind of goods does it trade? What does the average life of a person anywhere in this story is like? It is hard to imagine the existence of the average person when everything in the story only exist to drive the protag's action and progress the story. Thus, the world is not living and existing, but merely a shell that contain the protag.
Good for time-killing, and nothing else. I doubt you will remember this story a week later
