I kept wondering why the author of this went to such effort to set up the world only to have the protagonist be the stock-standard Guy In Black with Katana design. Even his name is just "Samurai" backwards. Then I saw their other credits and you know what, shouts to the Goblin Slayer guy for doing something without a "Sexual Violence" tag. That's progress.
This is enjoyable so far, especially for any fights that don't involve the protagonist. Jokes about his insipid design aside the bigger issue by far is him oneshotting everything. It's actually a pretty fun time seeing the rest of the party do stuff, and the story actually managed to have some tension.... by switching over to the perspective of a deuteragonist who actually has a backstory, motivations and most importantly, clearly defined strengths and weaknesses, you know, like a specialized member of a dungeon crawling RPG party. It's weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeird how well written even the character who communicates entirely through dog noises (like I shit you not mf is a full on yubi yubi puppy girl) comes off compared to the main character, because at least she has emotional range, things that she looks for in the dungeon (treasure), motivation (food), strengths (fighting), weaknesses (diplomacy), etc. It's like someone took a good story and then mangled it to insert their Extremely Cool katana-wielding, all-black wearing, maxed stat, oneshot killer chuuni alter ego. It's business as usual for the genre as a whole but you don't really expect it in something that's otherwise this good.
Regardless this is still pretty decent, at least for now. I'm assuming out of hand that the protagonist will continue gg ez'ing everything outside of the specific things the rest of the party is set up for but it's got good atmosphere and very good side characters. Shouts to Garbage, Garbage #1
