I always interpreted BLAME as a futuristic dystopian on Franz Kafka's massive, oppressive and highly bureaucratized structure that is described in his unfinished work, The Castle.

The main character of that story, K, reminds me of Killy a lot. They're both outsiders that are trying to break through the system. The only difference from Kafka's K and Killy is that Killy has the means and resources to bruteforce his way against the silicon creatures and Governance.

Kafka's "K" has one enemy, the slow and oppressive bureaucracy that holds the castle's hierarchy together. This reminds me a lot of his opposition to Governance. This plot-twist on him helping a Silicon creature (when he would just blast them without second thought in BLAME) gives a new perspective on how Killy's ethics operate.
