It's sad that their both two failed creative but it makes sense. Considering how socially anxious Seiko was it makes sense that she never had the courage to chase her dream. And considering how much the dad(I can never remember his name) struggled with his education and paving his own way, it makes sense that his creativity dried up and he fell back onto his safe option. They were just two creative people who didn't know how to exist properly. They thought that maybe they could make it together but in order to do so they both abandoned their callings, killing any chance of them having their happily ever after.

Unwanted, aimless, dreams going nowhere... I wonder if she was trying to somehow live vicariously through her son, then rejected him when she realized he was his own person
Got me thinking of that Langston Hughes poem "A Dream Defered"

Art is freaking hard, you need to practice, practice and practice not to mention practice. You also need to have own style, it was goddamn stupid dream both failed to realize and wasted nearly a decade chasing, the only sane was Ichiro but Seiko remained.
Some may find themselve in the spotlight but you have better chance winning a lottery.

Recommend reading "Colourless Girl", it may not be it's main premise but dwell on various forms of art and it's background.

Either Seiko really has dementia and she briefly had a moment of clarity or we're in danger zone.
