Some of it's actually legit. And if you transpose certain periods for modern guitar/bass and drums, you effectively get something that just sounds like metal.

The people that I've learned to be leery of are those who listen to it while also bashing anything "contemporary" as though it's all "lesser than".

if you believe there to be an issue, I feel like you didn't understand the idea to begin with. Enjoy what you enjoy and let others do the same - why waste time on pointless debates doomed to go nowhere?

I have my preferences and opinions on music and what I would call music too, but so does everyone else. Who's to say who's supposedly right? It doesn't really matter. Everyone has an opinion, but who can actually back theirs up beyond the superficial?

tangentially, I've had my share of excellent discussions on the topic, especially with professionals who tend to look at things more methodically, with a wider and experienced lens, and actually engaging in the discussion.

Most of the time however it's emotionally blinded handwaving though, starting already entrenched with statements like "this is always terrible / the best" or "I would never consider this music"; never elaborating, never budging, never discussing. Whether there are good ideas to be considered - or lessons learned - is always lost if there is no proper exchange to begin with after all

I used to listen to classical music a lot. Now I prefer metal more.

Oh, and I am actually sort of insane, but that's independent of my music preferences.
