...How the fuck does salt "expire"?

Some of the salt that is mined for human consumption is like almost 500 million years old. It doesn't fucking go "bad".

The only Thing could be they where a ultra capatlist society and wanted to make sure people bought more waren then they need by writing meaningless expiration dates on them

The expiration dates on salt have nothing to do with the sodium chloride; they are there because of additives, flavorants, anti-caking agents, &c. They are for inventory and quality control, and for recalls.

Does the MC know that? Probably not. Most people see "expiration" and assume that means it can't be used any more.

Also, packaging. That's a big one, especially for liquids, even if the contents could theoretically outlast the place selling it.
