you don't HAVE to be a buddhist, you don't HAVE to pray every single second of your day, you don't HAVE to do the journey on foot without a penny, his mission was just "reach this temple". seems like he came to terms with the fact that what he wanted was a PERSONAL mission and even then there are other ways to do it that don't involve making the ones he loves miserable in the process
