The robot did nothing wrong.
The true question of the story: Why are we better than machines?

@th30wl he's an old man, besides the obvious fear of progress, he's afraid helene comes to take his place. If machines can also feel and act on it what's there to differentiate us from them?

It's because if robots are showing "progress" that means they have the capability to evolve. Not necessarily out of jealousy towards that particular robot, he is rather afraid there might be other robots like it. If robots can "grow", then.... We've all seen Terminator lolz

@dus4805 Na he is jealous and afraid, bit not because of the potential within Helene, rather of his own place in the current world.

Robots are in our current days are already way better at plenty of things than humans, so the problem is not really about being better or worse, that was done for back in the industrial revolution, AI can already self improve and evolve, and be adapted to things it wasn't supposed to do originally, bu always within restricted parameters of what it was programmed to do. So Joshua's words are more that of an old man, that is alone in a strange land, and is trying to cling to something, and is now suddenly, at least from his own point of view, seeing how that which he had left is now leaving him.

In Helene's case its program to recognize emotion, just went and improved to the point of being able to express emotion, not just being able to read it but also to share it, that's not even an specific human ability, other animals can do it, but what would be the point of a robot doing it? if you want a companion you can get a puppy, if you want a conversation you search for a human, but humans come with conflict, so maybe the idea behind Helene was to create the perfect companion? a yes-man, that would try to please like a talking dog, but just like a robot it would try to improve on its function and ironically that would end creating conflict, because a yes man should just do as it is told, not more than that.

When Joshua got Helene he did it out of sheer nostalgia for his daughter and the times of old, despite Helene being from the future, so of course he is unaware of what he signed up with when he got her.

In that society robots like Helene are not a problem, they were dealt with long ago one way or another, and Helene herself is just an antique, this could mean a variety of things, like for example:
- Robots like Helene that at this point are more like androids thanks to their cognitive abilities, they were long ago eliminated, and can be easily dealt with if more appear, thus they can be nonchalantly sold to collectors if the buyer appears.
- Robots like Helene were already integrated into society, a feeling machine is not an strange thing, for some reason we managed to come to a point where we can coexist with an entity different than ourselves without putting them in a subservient position.
- Or maybe we still use them as free labor while regulating their sense of independence, making them so that despite their awareness they have to perceive their state of servitude as enjoyable but not as generalizable to things that are not robots. I find this idea, way too evil, egocentric, and impractical, which is why i think it is something we would totally try to implement, and kind of did already for other humans before, with philosophies of servitude and knighthood in which serving a master was an honorable thing.

Anyway i think Joshua is afraid of becoming obsolete and lost the one thing he has left, rather than being afraid of a robot uprising, plus Helene is a good girl, even though she is neglecting her duties when confronted she doesn't tries to hide the fact, and apologizes for it.
