so *cough* for people who have a good "rice cooker" at home. it's totally viable to cook bread in it. I don't doubt that their isn't exclusive bread makers but if anyone wanted to comment about the familiar shape, it's probably the same utility but in-translation "rice-cooker" is a bit...
it's actually funny that my church has done this. they even made their own yeast.

Hm. I wonder if this refers only to Shunkai-san or maybe the Shingon sect ? Shingon sect is very esoteric with complex rituals (and history of self-mummification) so Shunkai's apparent materialistic worldview based on wealth could in direct contrast to that...

This is exactly what my bread maker at home looks like!! It's for kneads the dough and bakes it for you, though we always used a real oven for the baking. I had no idea you could make bread at all in a rice cooker... o-o

Unless im being a dumdum and dont understand what you wrote--

I think it's not just about Shunkai-san or the Shingon sect, but more like a jab at the current woes of Buddhism in Japan. For a long time, the temples have depended on funerals, pilgrimages and other services for their livelihood, but that market is shrinking, so some temples become very aggressive in their "marketing", so to speak.

There are many articles about the subject, but this one (https://religionnews.com/2020/06/12/young-japan-priests-try-to-breathe-life-into-fading-buddhism/) in particular caught my attention because one of the alternatives mentioned to running their temples "as a business" was one priest opening a Buddhist bar to help make Buddhist teachings more accessible, which sounds a lot like Buddha Cafe.
