Why are the meanings kinda different from the English words they're made out of? That's because these are examples of
Wasei Eigo, "pseudo-anglicisms" or basically English words that have been borrowed/repurposed for a new meaning by the Japanese, to suit their own purposes.
Another example is TL (Teens' Love) which, despite the English name, is actually JP jargon that refers to erotic/pornographic smut exclusively aimed at women. Many JP online manga stores even have entire sections dedicated to TL.
Yes, wasei eigo is cursed and often the bane of newbie translators and MTLers alike. My favorite examples are "
style" (スタイル), which actually means
figure, and "
bitch" (ビッチ) which actually means
slut. Anytime a girl is complimented on her "style" they're actually talking about her body shape, and if a girl is called a "bitch", they are actually calling her promiscuous. Watch out for these things.
