Absent, which is why they seem so pretty in the last picture. They can't see each other's imperfections without glasses.

I read it as him seeing her realizing he needs to clean himself up (nose hair and change clothes) and she might be embarrassed to be seen in that state and giving her time to do the same. Fairly thoughtful.
