This horrible man... he ignore his teritories.... will make hundreds of people hungry and homeless, manipulating boys into sex slave (which is kinda common in those days but still). Indulging in debauchery just because of mommy issue? Seriously? If you wanna go hungry and died of loneliness, do it yourself. Dont drag the poor people in your fief.

Ryan could simply have abdicated. The reader's choices are either to see the story as poorly constructed or to regard Ryan as a self-indulgent poseur.

I don't think the story wants readers to view Ryan as sympathetic, but rather as a pathetic husk of a human. A kind of worse-case future that Eque might have become had she gone down a path of irresponsibility and selfishness to escape her duties and her station.
I mean, I don't think (or perhaps, I just don't want to think) that the story would introduce its character as a pedophile, and then to say, "maybe he's right"
