It's a long arc about the past that apparently happened this early in the story because Higuchi's editor insisted on it. I suppose it'll make things clear why Lis has green magic.

While I love this author's characters and world building, I dislike how they present the story (based on Alice Academy/Gakuen Alice) 😭

And maybe because we as readers know how this story ends, I can't help but feel the King is being kind of selfish with forcing his love knowing what it means when a Black Witch falls in love with a White Witch.

I dont really get the point of that flashback, could’ve driven the point in a few narrated panels instead of getting sidetracked on the story of characters that arent really relevant to the main story.

I'm honestly not that interested in this arc. It's also a little ridiculous when both sides know love is poisonous to black mages.

Honestly the premise is ridiculous since black mages just hermit up and do their job/hobbies. I would understand if we were shown the possibility of black mages becoming evil, but everything implies they just turn into magical clams focused on collecting and purifying this horrific pollution that's plaguing the world for some reason.
Just leaves me baffled at what the hell is the white mages' problem here since apparently all they do is fuck around. They literally don't have to do anything to one-up the black mages because the black mages are just talking clams, and yet they decide to go make problems anyways.

To me, it feels like the whole "black mages cannot love" and "white mages are all about love" concepts are primarily to set up these "Romeo and Juliet" pairings: Luna and Lis, and now the Green Magician and the White Magician King.

The thing is that we've yet to see what exactly happens to a black magician in love, and I think we're getting to that with the Green Magician. All we've been told in omake pages is that it changes a black magician's magic: not that they would die or anything like that.

As for what the deal is with the white magicians, well, the way I understand it is that they are the government. They're the ones that created the country. They are the politicians and the cops. And that's all I need to understand how and why they all suck so much.

Ok, what was the point of sidetracking like this?! Did the author just wanna wrote yaoi but didn’t want to start a new manga so they shoved it in here?!! This feels like something that a bit of exposition would‘ve fixed

I hesitate to call this sidetracking because this is important to the overarching lore of the story and the past of both our characters, that's also why the previous side stories existed so in theory I think this detour is good.

However the problem lies in the execution, namely that unlike the previous flashback stories that were more emotional affairs with some sprinkling of lore, this one has way more exposition in it which makes it hard to get invested in the romance at the centre, and said romance was basically just instalove (even if we know that white mage dude screws him over by the end) with sex constantly being mentioned in a way no other romance in the story has gotten. It's all very old yaoi, which is a bit befuddling because otherwise the manga has been much better at justifying people's deep emotions.
