Bears worth reminding that gods are way more common in Japanese mythology, a minor regional snake god doesn't have the same rarity as Thor turning up at your company's potluck

Kami are a lot more complicated and probably shouldn't be conflated with actual Gods.

Think of them as spirits that are symbolic of general ideas. There are the Kami that would be compared to a pantheon, but there are also individuals who are elevated to Kami after death, the ancestors of an entire clan can sometimes be a singular Kami, there are various everyday objects that can be elevated to the level of Kami if they're significant enough, and even elements of nature and general ideas can become Kami.
