Almost my thoughts exactly: he's no hero--only one by title, and he has weak virtues that
barely take precedence over his lust for whatever moves. Those virtues must be weak: if he wasn't so fearful for his chastity at the sight of a pretty girl drawing near (Japanese writing is a funny thing, when comedy's mixed with pretty girls and good art) that he'd fixate on himself, perhaps he'd be able to see Uriel was in a bad way and catch her--as opposed to letting her faceplant.
Alas, Cherryboi's virtues are as weak as he is, and the reader's supposed to relate with that.
