Seriously though werewolves just need to transform so those could have been a kind of werewolf. If not it is probably a misunderstanding between werewolves and dire wolves or something. These days a lot of the authors have just taken to using werewolf for any wolf monster or beastkin.

The names have lost meaning in translation i guess. Maybe the translators are messing up or the translation for werewolf is wiered.
