gonna go ahead and guess the running's both relevant because it's the One Thing that Chihaya has and will likely factor into whatever she does, even past this makeup race - but that it's also going to be central in a symbolic sense, like "running away from your problems" and "running toward your future" type thing.
"i was afraid of 'giving it my all'" from page 15 of chapter 2 really summarizes how and why Chihaya came to be in her current situation, and her narration shows that she's aware of it deep down (even though she blames covid out loud). it's the weight of that realization that's such a burden on her, and i really like the way the author portrays it.
