Even if this feels old by female-oriented Romance manga standards, I'd say plenty of male leads in male-oriented Romance manga would wish they have half the confidence this guy has. Then we wouldn't be dancing around the will-they-won't-they question for dozens of fruitless chapters. That they even kissed here means this is already beating some of those "rom"coms where blushing apparently counts for romance.
But thinking about it further, this is (mostly) just a reversal of the good-looking popular girl x plain and timid boy stuff I've been seeing a lot of. I guess the only difference is that Hanazono is kinda cute instead of being a true plain jane in the same way some male leads in male-oriented romcoms are truly generic-looking and forgettable dudes whose only quality is being nice.
