Okay so after trying to make sense of the inconsistency between each panel i think i figured out which position the mangaka was failing to draw properly. I'm not 100% sure but you can import the PGN below on Lichess to see for yourselves, i think this might make sense.

What Kuro is doing is underpromoting to knight and giving a check. That surprised Philidor since he expected a queen promotion. Stockfish says this is forced mate in 5 and it's a brilliant move, the only one that lets white win. Maybe this is from a famous puzzle or from a famous game, i don't know.
