So the neighbour's definitely a lesbian dating a woman, yeah? Otherwise the translators wouldn't have translated it with gender-neutral pronouns. This is gonna be a Japanese thing where the gender isn't ever stated so main characters assume it.
I think it's more the fact that they're high schoolers living together without parents while dating. That stuff should wait until you're an adult, I think is the cultural perspective on it.
