Ok hot take I guess: This series was so good when it was just a bunch of worldbuilding shorts. It had charm and style.
I don't think the over-arching dramatic plotline works as well.

Merryweather really likes these world-ending plotline twists for some reason. I've read a couple of other series from him and they all went in similar directions.
