That aside, where'd they even find high-octane fuel for his car? I know the manga setting is years back, but JP-x jet fuel is super low octane, and IIRC, US military doesn't use avgas even on their helicopter?

Avgas might still be lingering around for any non-turboprop aircraft on base, but Avgas is 100LL, not the 110 with most race gas. So what I'm thinking is that some guys who race on base have a couple barrels of Sunoco or similar race gas stashed away for the weekends.
