For the non-Fate fanatics: Alaya is basically the part of the Planet's consciousness that constitutes the Counter Force, made up of our collective unconscious will to avoid extinction. It doesn't always agree with the will of the Planet itself. As humans are part of the planet, initially Alaya was part of the Planet's will, but as we began to develop independence from nature Alaya eventually split from it entirely.
