It's the truth though, going out to eat with my girlfriend usually ends up with me getting 1.5 meals. Not that I'm complainin'
On the flip side, 'I'm not hungry' can easily turn into 'I'll just have most of yours', so....

Putting aside that this is not really a thing over there, she went a Ramen Jirou, a very particular type of ramen subculture.
Here's an article on it: https://ramenbeast.substack.com/p/ramen-jiro-japans-most-infamous-food
tldr: it's the cheeseburger of ramen. big on portions, big on garlic, big on fat, big on salt, heavy, no delicacy or refinement, staff bordering on rude, no patience for newbies or tourists. if you go there, you should go knowing what you want and knowing your limits, and the chef will chastise you if you ordered too much.
Finally read the whole thing, absolutely fascinating noodle subculture, suddenly things make way more sense in this and many other manga with piled high bowls of steaming noodles.

In what, exactly? Doggy bags aren't especially common outside the US, from what I understand.
Well of course you can't put ramen broth in a bag...

But seriously, it'd be a shame if Japan had the culture of massive food waste a lack of takeout containers would imply. I hope that is not true.

I... I don't think that expands your stomach capacity. And what about savoring the food??
I imagine that the typically smaller portions about everywhere outside of North America comes into play. American restaurants in particular are famous for the amount of food served.
