I thought the maid was shady when in the earlier chapters she had sweat on her face when Maria asked her to send a letter to her father. Then as the chapters went on I thought she was an actual friend/sister.

But what is the Emperor's gameplan?
He married Maria, wouldn't it have been much more easier to get her preggo instead of railing every other girl? And he should have known the repayment date for his loan.

He married her for her family connections, but had his little man-feelings hurt by how much more capable she was than him. Probably couldn't get it up with her out of overwhelming feelings of inferiority.

I'm going to be honest the betrayal of the maid just feels wasted and dumb, like there already was the consort so adding the maid is just "oh you thought everyone you know and loved and are dead and you were betrayed by you husband too but wait your maid who has been advocating for your safety has also betrayed you cause................well you should stop worrying about that and realize the tragedy".

Also why take her as hostage and nothing else, just kill everyone. The ML's reputation and kingdom are known as barbarians so everything he has done to seem noble and not like a barbarian seems dumb. Like the woman you love has actively lost everything and has no hope outside of revenge so playing the knight in shining armor seems moot since that's not what she needs or wants.
I get that this is supposed to be tragedy to love story but the villainy is rivaling the Chinese writing level

I honestly think that they probably cant pay even if you give them a year cause She is the only one moving with earnesty in the kingdom. Everyone else is just going for their own agenda.

1. Her wellbeing
Shes in a really really bad shape. Experiencing all that and ended in up destroying your own empire may not be good for her sanity. Giving her sometime to contemplate, after all what slave will go back to his master if not the master is a caring person. That will lead to the second point...

2.Willingness
Just to make sure, that Empress to her own accord, burns that empire in the ground. Half of it was already done by the maid lmao.

He can dispose the empire whenever he wants but everything is for her alone.

I actually saw it coming...i was even expecting it to happen way earlier or rather it to get reveal earlier
basically if you go back, when maria asks nancy if she delivered the letter to her parents or not, nancy for a second gets taken aback, before affirming that she sent the letter with a weak voice (which to me looked like she actually didn't and implied she's working for henry) and then maria right away went monologue mode about hoping her family to evacuate (which is the clear anime trope of things not going the way you think it will go)
of course, it wasn't conclusive enough to say nancy was a traitor, and i kinda was hoping to be wrong, but oh boy, not only she led to maria's parents die, but a lot of innocent palace servants to die as well as the audacity to care for maria and be her "maid" afterword...

I feel like the maid was telegraphed well. And I think it was necessary. All revenge stories like this are always more satisfying when none of them are even a little redeeming.

We don't know if there's a reason for it, but as said earlier in the story, Maria has never gotten pregnant to the point where they had doctors check if she was physically unable to have children anymore. Might have some reason behind it, might just be bad luck, we'll just have to see.
