TBF, this manga is/was basically drawn and written with personal vigilante justice in mind... relying on public opinion was never an option for personal justice; only vengeful killings. That being said, going to the news media and trying to raise an issue as a single mom who has a limited social circle is likely impossible in Japan.
Now on your first line... think of it as the lecturing speaker being a complete asshole in a position of power showcasing their cruelty in full. The principal literally gave 0 f***s and spoke of his son as if his son is truly an exceptional person. If you need a real life example, look at the current president of the united states.
