Hey scannies and scanniettes.

I want to start a collaborative project touching the subject of Japanese onomatopoeia/sound effects, focusing on those in manga, in form of an online dictionary.
(the dictionary is planned as for now as JP->EN, but if someone wants to add Spanish or another popular language would be great too)

Currently there's no good one (errors, lack of examples, too direct translations, etc.), and what's the worst the existing ones aren't being updated.

Of course that's a huge task to take on, which will require a lot of scanniehours of scanniework, which means I can't really do it alone.

What type of person would be a help? Probably a lot of you might think it's most directed at people who know Japanese at least in some capacity, but that's not exactly the case, even if you don't know Japanese you can help. What I think the project needs are people like:

  • someone who can read Japanese
  • someone who is an English native (or someone with advanced level of English)
  • scanlators in general who will provide screenshots of sound effects used in manga
  • anyone else who thinks that they can provide useful info or help in creating a dictionary like that

I think that anyone wanting to help should be able to at least read kana (hiragana/katakana and what romaji they equal to (check on wikipedia there are variants of romaji for some kana!)). The effort required to learn how to read kana is very minimal and very useful as basically all sound effects are either hiragana or katakana in manga, that means you can read them on their own even if you don't know anything else about Japanese.

About the current state of the project, basically I only started with creating a few online accounts to communicate with people and provide updates.
For now I think about using gdrive/gsheets as a way to do collaboration on the dictionary - but that's just current first iteration, I'm open to suggestions what else could be better, that will also depend on what people helping would prefer.
