Yeah, that's why i said "being a royal guard aside". His boast was two-tiered, aka "You are looking at the future knight! No, i can go even further and be employed by the royalty directly!". My point was that even before he thought about "raising expectations farther", he was still boasting even about just being knighted, which from the perspective of any noble would be laughable bravado "from the upstart that isn't even an upstart yet"
