Why does the MC dude keep meeting Hanamitsuji? Half of her lines to him are insults, and the other half is pretty much indirect insults questioning his way of life and choices. There surely should be a better way to handle it, but he clearly doesn't have the charisma to sway the popular opinion.

I understand what you're saying; he's at the bottom, but Hoshigasaki isn't. I don't think his position is even that important in this situation, he was pretty much neutral before this incident.
I believe that if anyone, including the MC, attempted to defend her, people would perceive the ones cornering her as bullies, making more people willing to defend her.

Hoshigasaki's own friend wasn't willing to say anything when she got confronted.
