It's probably because of that failure he makes a comment about, during the casting.

Iirc the failure causes the caster to be frozen alongside the target, at least that's what so far they've found out but I wouldn't put it past them to just say that's what causes the spell to be cut short. Afterall, apparently Avan and Vearn are the 2 living beings that can use the spell and Avan managed to do it after quite some research.
