Letting your child to have a taste of wine (mixed with water) is something I've heard is common in countries where wine is rather common drink. Still parenting choices are up to them parents.

You should not asume everything is period accurate in a comic. This is just a one view point of the author's "fantasy" of the times. Of course, I would not deny that these things were impossible things of the time. But it definitely was not so "black and white". Simply there was all kinds of things and we mainly see the most striking and talked matters.
