The proper saying is "Blood of the covenant is thicker then the water of the womb" which actually signifies bonds created through commonality and hardships are thicker then any sort of blood relations which is the exact opposite meaning of whats used in the manga. Its also one of the most misused sayings because of this.

@Spencer1K I was thinking exactly the same thing. Not many people understand the correct meaning of that phrase. It does not mean “family before all others” like most think it does, but is really equivalent to the proverb “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Even family may betray or abandon you, but a blood covenant brother would die before breaking his vow.

@blendenzo Who has "blood covenant brothers" in this day and age? Even if the original meaning of the saying has been reversed, it just reflects how it is in reality. Unless you are creating realistic historical drama, you need to use sayings and expressions in a way the readers would understand them.
